After 20 Years Away From The Game, Jeff Shircel Wins the Goose Island Mild Winter Ale Galactic 9-Pin Tournament

SHEBOYGAN FALLS – The 12th Goose Island Mild Winter Ale Galactic 9-Pin Tournament was held on Thursday, December 29th and Jeff Shircel dominated the tournament from start to finish defeating Tim Felsinger winning the event and $140.00.

2011-12-30 01.18.05

In ensuring his victory, Jeff rolled two 9-pin 300 games in the final two rounds; including a championship game that featured 9 natural strikes.

Qualifying results can be found here.  Playoff Results can be found here.  Payouts can be found here. and Bracket Results can be found here.  The entire tournament newsletter can be found here.

In the semi-finals round, Jeff defeated Jodi Peper 345-252 while Tim defeated Trevor Yonan 317-284.  The Tournament featured 9-pin 300 games by Eric Otte (2), Trevor Yonan (2), Tim Felsinger (2), Jeff Shircel (2), Ben Cleveland, Tim Firgens, and Aaron Cleveland.

Jeff Shircel lead all 86 qualifiers with a 900 series with handicap pins followed by Aaron Cleveland (890), Eric Otte (881) and Shannon Alfson (880).  In the One-Shot Pot game, Jodi Peper won the entire $256.00 prize (then split it with Judy Scott who she went in corporate on the tickets).  Bryan Schnettler was drawn as the winner of the Roto Grip Bowling ball.  Bryan bowled that night despite being fairly ill the previous couple of days.  Way to sack up Bryan!!

Each year we give away a low-bowler prize and Joan Bischoff is our 2-time champion of that prize with a 423 series – 460 pins behind the cut line.

The Storm Bowler of the Year competition is a 4-horse race heading into the final event.  With his performance in the 9-pin, Aaron Cleveland (261) has pulled just a few points ahead of brother Ben Cleveland (231) and Mike Walters (230).  Lurking in the shadows is Tim Firgens with a mathematical chance to overtake Aaron, Ben and Mike, but it would take a nearly perfect tournament for Tim and have bad fortune come over all three competitors ahead of him.

All four finalists have never won the Bowler of the Year meaning we will have a new champion this season.

Our last event of the season is the Fab 5 Baker Team Tournament on Saturday, March 3rd at 6:30pm at Odyssey Fun Center.  Contact Erick at erickheling@sbcglobal.net to sign up on a team in this event that nearly at capacity.

The tournament committee wishes to thank Larry’s Distributing and Roto Grip for their continued support of our tournaments.

Local Cops Trade In Patrol Cars For Bowling Shoes

By Janelle Ericsson

ORCHARD MESA, Colo., — The owner at Orchard Mesa Lanes has been opening up his business for the “Bowl With A Cop” day for nearly 15 years.

“I have kids, my kids grew up here and I think it’s a good town to grow up in, and if i can help that’s great,” owner Eric Loeb said.

It’s an event where kids bowl for free while spending time with our boys in blue.

“I think it’s a good thing for the kids to meet police in a little different setting where it’s not imposing to them or anything like that,” Loeb said. “They have fun, the police have fun and it’s just something I like to do.”

And spending time with kids is also something the cops enjoy.

“It’s good for the kids to get to talk to officers and talk to somebody in uniform and realize that we’re people, we’re human beings and that we’re approachable we can be friendly and have fun too,” Mesa County Sheriff’s Deputy Ben Carnes said.

After all, the whole event is about kids making a positive relationship with the cops, and bowling seems to break the ice.

“It seems like they’re having a good time, they’re having a lot of fun,” Carnes said. “We have one kid I he’s about 12 years old and he’s out bowling everybody so he’s teaching the cops how to bowl.”

“I don’t know I haven’t really heard anything maybe they’re just watching me trying to,” bowler Alex Williamson said.

But would he say he’s better than some of the cops?

“Some of them yeah, the other ones I’d imagine come down and practice,” Williamson said.

“Well I practice,” seven year old bowler Taylor said. “I practice bowling on the Wii and it’s my first time being in a real life bowling alley.”

Year after year, kids and police continue to show up. And Loeb says that is why he has no plans of stopping the event anytime soon.

“Well because the kids turn out and the police turn out so it pretty well takes care of itself,” he said. “We see these kids when they’re 5 years old and we see these kids when they’re 15 years old so we like to see them here instead of out on the streets.”

There will be an additional “Bowl With A Cop” day Thursday. It will be free for kids from 10 AM to 2 PM at Orchard Mesa Lanes Off 27 Road.

Mickelson Dominates Another Kegel Pattern; Knocks Richter from Grand Championship Bracket

Jacob Mickelson dominated his second oil pattern in route to easily winning the Kegel Abbey Road segment in December.

Jacob finished with 39 points and a comfortable 9 point lead over Steve Richter at 30 points.  By virtue of the rules of the Grand Championship, Richter is not awarded the position in the Championships, but an additional Wild Card position is added to the tournament based on yearly points.

In those yearly points if the season ended today Rudy DelValle (93 points) and Steve Richter (90) would get into the Grand Championship.  However, Paul Gloede (89), Bryan Schnettler (89) and Aaron Nachtwey (83) are all within very close striking distance.

A full standings sheet after this week’s action can be found here.

Grand Championship Bracket

Here is what the Grand Championship bracket looks like today:

This week you could see how comfortable people were getting with the lane pattern and the moves that accompany it with 14 out of the 22 people recording over-average scores for the week.  That does not include two people who were less than 3 pins per game under their average.

Stephanie Frank, home from her first semester at Viterbo University lead the pace with a score of +123.  She was followed by Jacob Mickelson (+122), Ben Cleveland (+113), Brittney Morton (+94) and Bryan Schnettler (+83).

  • Paul Gloede (867)
  • Carey Slater (810)
  • Aaron Nachtwey (802)
  • Brittney Morton (790)
  • Bryan Schnettler (783)
  • Frank Svacina (778)
  • Jacob Mickleson (762)
  • Stephanie Frank (715)
  • Nicole Paasch (705)
  • Sarah Paasch (648)
  • Jacob DelValle (483)

With the Big Strike Jackpot growing on a weekly basis and no winner since week #4, the jackpot is now up to $126.  David Paasch, Jacob Mickelson and Bryan Schnettler all took shots to knock off the Jackpot with no one succeeding.  That value rolls over to our January segment.

Point totals for the week were (those who had winning records):
